National Conference on Decriminalization and Re-Classification of Petty Offences in Africa 30.03.2017

Following the conclusion of the policy research on petty offences and practices affecting populations at National Level and in Kisumu, Mombasa and Nairobi county levels, ICJ Kenya alongside its national and regional partners has convened a National Conference on Decriminalization and Re-classification of petty offence in Kenya on 24th and 25th March 2016 at Hilton Hotel, Nairobi Kenya.

The primary objective of the conference was to disseminate the findings of the research in a bid to generate substantive discussions around the handling of alleged/actual petty offences in Kenya and the human rights violations arising as a result.

The conference provided a platform to convene the duty bearers to collectively agree upon the steps to be taken towards decriminalization petty offences in Kenya and further generate the push necessary to jump-start reforms on this critical issue.

The conference also provided a platform for sharing of best practices, challenges, lessons learnt and progressive steps in country and by the regional partners in addressing the petty offences dilemma and the human rights violations arising from the process of handing potential and actual petty offences.
