Decriminalising and declassifying petty offences in Tunisian legislation

20-21 March 2021

Recently, the Organization Against Torture in Tunisia organised an experts seminar, as part of this campaign’s activities. The seminar was held in a hotel in Hammamet on March 20 and 21, 2021.

The general objective of this conference was to raise awareness among Tunisia’s civil society and judicial authorities about the importance of implementing alternative penalties for petty offences rather than repressive ones.

The specific objectives were: first, to identify the petty offences and alternative penalties that currently exist in Tunisian laws and and legislation. Second, to draw the attention to the connection between poverty, social and economic policies with the rise of crime and offenses. Third, to come up with recommendations to advocate for the reform of penal Code and laws criminalising petty offences. Thirty-one participants attended this conference. Among them judges, magistrates, lawyers, representatives of civil society, psychologists, sociologists, and economists.
