In October 2022, PRI responded to a call for input by the UN Working Group on discrimination against women and girls, for its upcoming report to the Human Rights Council on “Human Security of Women and Girls in the Context of Poverty and Inequality”. As a member of the campaign, PRI highlighted the disproportionate criminalisation of women and girls living in poverty and the risks to their human security in detention. It also set out recommendations to improve women’s security, including implementation of the UN Bangkok Rules and repeal or reform of laws that criminalise acts associated with poverty, status offences, and other offences that disproportionately impact poor and marginalised women and girls, including punitive drug laws.
